Learning to Play Golf
It is never too late or too early to learn to play golf. But to be able to advance from a total beginner to a good player, you will need lots of patience and practice as well as some guidance because golf is not as easy as it may seem.
The good news is that there are many ways to learn how to hit the ball using the correct golf clubs and golf bags, to achieve maximum distance and precision at the same time. Listed below are only a few of many ways to take your golfing skills to a higher level.
-
Golf school. The classes typically include both theory and hands-on instructions but it is a good idea to inform yourself well about the programme before you enrol. Also, be sure to choose a programme that meets your level of skills. If you already know the basics, you will probably be bored at classes for total beginners. Classes for pros, on the other hand, will not enable you to advance either if you are a beginner because they assume that you already know the basics which, however, you still have to master.
-
Private golf lessons. These are desirable by both beginners and golf players who would like to further develop their skills. The main advantage of taking private golf lessons over attending a golf school is that you do not have to share the instructor with the entire class. As a result, you can expect to advance much faster. Unfortunately, private lessons are quite expensive, especially if you want to learn from a top golfer.
-
Instructional DVDs. They can be very helpful if you make them a commitment and practice as directed. And they are very inexpensive too, especially in comparison to golf classes and private lessons. Unfortunately, there is no one to correct you if you are doing anything wrong. In addition, the effect of instructional DVDs is often comparable to that of language learning audio/video material. Only a minority of people really make it to the last level.
-
Watching the professionals “at work”. You cannot expect to learn to play golf from watching the professionals alone but it is without a doubt a good idea to watch professional golfers and pay close attention to their techniques. There are many golf tournaments and competitions throughout most of the year. In addition, the most important events are broadcast by at least one sports channel.
Do Your “Homework”
Regardless of which method you choose to learn to play golf, you cannot expect from it to turn you into a pro. Golf schools, private lessons and instructional DVDs can only teach you how to improve particular aspects of your swing but you need to learn to master it on your own through practice, practice and more practice.
